Delivery and express

Two rules under Settings → Pricing & plans → Default pricing rules put money on an order without anybody typing it. Both are optional: leave a field blank and that rule does nothing at all.

The delivery fee

The fee is set when the order is created, and only if the order carries an address. A walk-in with nothing to deliver never picks one up, which is why the address field at intake is worth leaving blank when the customer is collecting.

The threshold is measured against the items subtotal at that same moment — before any surcharge, before tax. Meet it and the fee is set to nothing rather than added and then removed, so the order never shows a delivery line at all.

After creation the fee stops moving on its own. Add three more shirts to an order that was $2 short of free delivery and the fee stays exactly where it was, while everything around it re-rates. The Delivery fee field on the order is there for precisely that: an operator can set it to whatever is right, including nothing.

The express surcharge

Express surcharge (%) is a percentage of the items subtotal, charged on any order marked Urgent. Set 50 and a $40 bag of washing becomes $60 of goods.

Priority is a property of the order, not of the catalogue. It is toggled on the order itself, and the screen warns before you commit — "Urgent orders add a 50% express surcharge to the subtotal", with your own figure in it.

Unlike the delivery fee, the surcharge is recalculated every time the order's lines change, because it is a percentage of a subtotal that moves. Add an item to an urgent order and the surcharge grows with it. Take the order off Urgent and the surcharge disappears.

Both are taxed — see Tax. They part company when a discount is involved: the express surcharge is discountable along with the goods, the delivery fee never is. A hundred per cent off still leaves the delivery to pay, which is the subject of Discounts and loyalty.
